Transplants

Energetic water gushing over the crack of a cliffside. A bright orange poppy pushing through a bed of ash after a forest fire. A glistening geode discovered among the earth-tones of a creek floor. The comfort and connection felt in the glowing embers of a campfire against the night sky. Transplants is a body of mixed media sculpture that explores my relationship between myself and nature.  Often mirroring textures and forms experienced in my many hours spent in the outdoors, I work intuitively to channel the energy, ferocity and wonder I have found throughout my explorations. Crevices and wrinkles within the work are reminiscent of the human body yet also the bark or a burl found in a tree trunk. Liquids ooze like the sap of a maple tree yet sparkle like the ocean caught in the sun’s ray. Fuzzy textures like those found on a caterpillar cover the normally flesh-like surface of a succulent. These forms leave lingering questions as to whether they are from the ocean, the desert, or even the forest, evoking a sense of belonging in many places yet nowhere at the same time.
